You will research and be in charge of the design the layout of the zoo, you will decide the best layout of the zoo animals habitats, keeping in mind the safety of the zoo animals and their keepers.  You will research the size of space needed for each animal to live safely in their habitat without injury to themselves, other animals or people.

Zoo Map Questions:

 

What do you observe about the placement of the different animals Habitats in the zoo?

 

 

Do you observe many similarities in the zoo designs?

 

 

Do you think each animal has enough space in their habitat?

 

 

How will you keep the animals in their own space, will you use fences?  Concrete?  Glass?

 

 

Pay attention to how the sections of the zoo are divided, do you have any ideas on how your group can divide the different animals?

 

 

Do you think the observing areas are safe for small children?

 

 

What do you notice about zoos, are there a lot of trees, benches, pathways, restrooms?  Write down some other things you see in the maps.

 

 

What safety elements will you keep in mind when you make your zoo design.

 

 

What will you need to keep in mind when making paths for people visiting the zoo?

In this website you will look at the most current exhibit additions from around the world.  Pay attention to the habitats and animals in the exhibit.

International Zoo Design

In the San Diego zoo website you can follow the links of everything necessary to design a zoo.  You will focus more on the Designing and Constructing page and also Building and Maintaining section, but you may find this whole area useful in your research. 

How to Build a Zoo

The encyclopedia may be a useful resource for any additional information you may need.

Show your results:
Print out graph paper by downloading the adobe file from the link below.   Draw a preliminary outline of your Zoo Design, you will share this with your group and turn it in for part of your role grade at the end of the webquest.

Once you have completed your research, go back to the process area and follow the instructions to finish this webquest with your Research Group.  You will lead the group on the activity that requires your expertise, but you will all work together.  Great job researching, now let's get started on your group project!
