The New Arlington Zoo Needs You:


Let’s get started!  Your research team will start by meeting the animals that need a new home.  Then you will read the history of zoos across the United States and see how new zoos get started.

 

Next you will break into groups and your Research Team will conduct research and design a new zoo for Arlington.  After doing your research you will work closely with your team members to put everything together and design the best zoo possible.  After your research and design is complete you get to create an interesting presentation to persuade your classmates to choose your zoo design.  Good luck and have fun!

 

 

Each team member will have ONE of the following important jobs to complete:

1) Zoologists: You will research the animals and identify their basic needs.  You will identify what daily care will be needed for each animal.  Your job will be to make sure the zoo has the supplies and care needed available for each animal.

2) Habitat Specialists: You will research what the best type  of home is for each animal by comparing their natural habitat and the habitats that are used at zoos across the country.  You will make sure the inside of each animal habitat will make the animal feel at home.

3) Budget Keepers:  You will research the costs of running a zoo and caring for the animals. You will observe the cost of constructing exhibits.  Your task will be to discover which animals cost the most to care for and to come up with creative ways to make a profit keeping these expenses in mind.

4) Architects: You will research and design the layout of the zoo, you will decide the best layout of the zoo animals habitats, keeping in mind the safety of the zoo animals and their keepers.  You will research the size of space needed for each animal to live safely in their habitat without injury to themselves, other animals or people.
